Stockroom assistant/visual merchandising - anyone do either of these?

Hi,
I'm looking at getting a job as a stockroom assistant in fashion retail with a view to getting into visual merchandising. I have not worked fashion at all before - so would appreciate anyones advice - ie is this a good way to get into VM? I am also studying a certificate in VM and come from a design/advertising background.
suggestions/tips welcome!!

I used to be a vm with arcadia.
I voluntered to do a few displays at first then it took of i found the best advice and one i stuck to, take pictures of all your work and other displays.
I do hope you get into vming as i loved it, especially when people stopped to look at my work and said it was wonderful.

Thanks momma39 - am looking into volunteer work now. Think this may be better than stockroom assistant.

If anyone else has thoughts on getting into Visual Merchandising, I'd love to hear...
