How to Say "No".....

I currently work 2 days a week as a teacher, on a supply basis and also do the odd extra day here and there to cover illness, courses etc.

I have 2 young children (4 and 6) so I feel very lucky to have these hours as they allow me to do the school run for,the majority of the week whilst also bringing in some cash and doing a job I enjoy.

Last week my head teacher offered me more hours which would mean I would be full time bar 3 afternoons. When she initially asked me I was a bit shocked and asked if I could have a few days to think about it.

I've decided that I want to stick to my 2 days for the time being.

How do I say "no" without seeming like a wimp? And also without wanting to rule out any increase in hours in the future?

Just be honest "at present I couldn't commit to so many hours on a regular basis, however I appreciate the flexibility of the additional days supply I do for you, and when my children are a bit older I would definitely consider increasing my hours"

If you don't want to do it, don't. TBH, the HT could just be sounding you out, supposing you did want extra hours and she didn't ask you?

I sometimes find it hard to say "no" and can take on too much. I will be assertive yet appreciative of the offer.

"Thank you for your offer. I love my job / work/life balance under the current arrangements and presently don't want to up my hours. I'd be happy to review the situation in one, two, three, four, five years time...."

Meeting went well. Head teacher was very understanding and said she would ask me again in a few years when the time was right.

I've stuck to my 2 days and I'm so relieved
