Career Break Advice

I'm due to go back to work in a few months after a second mat leave. I'm thinking of requesting a year's career break as childcare costs are prohibitively high at the moment and after a further year off DC1 will be at school.

My company have no policy for career breaks so I would have to argue my case for them to consider it.

Any advice on the positives for the company? What else do I need to consider? I have 7 years experience working for them and received a glowing appraisal just before I finished up for my current mat leave.

It sounds like a good idea. I arranged to take a career break from my old job just before I returned from ml. They said I would have to formally resign then reapply for a job when I wanted to comeback. That put me off so I didn't do it.

Try to get the break so they don't make you resign. Could you call it a sabbatical?

I thought about doing this - am also due back soon after dc2. My team didn't/doesn't have enough work for everyone inc me really so I was going to put it that it would save the company money but mean that if/when they needed more capacity then I would be available, emphase loyalty to company etc but as it happened one of my colleagues handed in his notice and so I know they need me to go back otherwise they would have to recruit (and then wouldn't want to hold job for me in a year's time) so didn't end up asking.
