Please could someone help me write my CV?

I really need to find another job but I just don't know how to do a CV because at the grand old age of 41 I've only ever written one twice, the last time being when I got this job nearly 13 years ago

I'd really appreciate some pointers

There are at least 5 modern ways of writing CVs that get widely touted. I have NO IDEA how you figure out which one is right for each job, although apparently the "creative" type will only appeal in truly creative industries.

And then on top of that, many jobs do not want CVs, they want you to fill in their own format application letter and then ask you to write a cover letter and/or supporting statement. I am increasingly thinking in those cases the supporting statement should read like the first half of a skills-based CV, listing in bullet points your skills, with opening and closing paragraphs for generic qualities like conscientious, team worker, etc.

I think it's "Normal" now to start with a "personal statement" that briefly outlines your skills/experience and talks about what you want out your next job (or if applying for a specific job, tailored to suggest you're ideal for that role). This shoudl be fairly short and punchy.

Assuming you're going for a job in broadly the same field as currently, I'd then suggest listing your experience in reverse chronological order. Focus on things you've achieved e.g. rather than saying "I was a team leader for 5 people", put "I was the team leader of a successful team that consistently met and exceeded their objectives".

Then probably add a section for relevant skills. Another for education/qualifications. Optionally can put an "interests" section.

You might want to put the skills or qualifications bit higher up depending on whether they are particularly key.

Tip: CVs are not written in the first person. Do not use the word I.

I didn't have a personal statement, but I had a well written covering letter instead. The bulk stayed the same for each application but then was tweaked and changed to reflect the job description.

Job titles
What IT you use
Then shape it into a CV - start with current job and work backwards through them (or if you've been in the same company has the job changed over the years? Started as a junior admin, now PA to director and managing a team of 5 staff etc) , then qualifications, then any courses you've been on (first aid, IT, modern leadership etc) then a little bit about your self... Not you enjoy socialising and reading!

Make yourself sound positive and capable.
