child tax credit and freelance, where to start

Hi there. I am starting maternity leave in June and my DH is leaving his fulltime employment for freelance work. Can freelancers claim child tax credit? Anyone have any advice on where to get info before the baby arrives. Thank you in advance.

or maybe I am asking about work tax credit, sorry new to this whole idea.. first baby

I think you can but as far as I know tax credits are based on the previous years earnings... so you would be awarded based on the previous year and when you have proof of any difference in earnings (ie: after a couple of months of a lower or higher salary) then they could look into amending the amount awarded.
