Sorry, just loved this quote from the radiant Kate Winslet in the Independent today:

"Being a single mother is not remotely daunting. There's an instinctive strength that just kicks in. I didn't even get a nanny until she was nine months old. It's absolutely exhausting , but I wanted to experience all those thngs."

I like the "didn't even" bit. Wouldn't it be lovely to have a choice about wanting to experience exhaustion!

But she's only been a single mother for a few weeks - and I thought poor old Jim(?) did most of the mothering before that???

ScummyMummy · 12/01/2002 19:20

Rah... I thought old Kate was a bit more down to earth than that. Obviously not! I suppose she's got used to her riches and can't imagine that her choices aren't universally available. Or maybe she just wasn't watching her words very carefully? (trying desperately to be uncharacteristically charitable, here!)

Lizzer · 14/01/2002 15:53

I'm sorry but I think Kate's great so am going to stand up for her here! If I had a job where I could afford to have one to one childcare then I'd get a nanny in straight away. She's been through a rough time and I admire her for doing things 'better' than most celebrity Mums. She stuck with b/feeding and only left her overnight once, for a meeting in LA, at around 6 months or so. How good is that compared to my favourite 'love to hate them' couple Nicole Appleton and Liam Gallagher who left their's at 3 weeks old for 11days! And how many times has Posh ditched Brooklyn in his lifetime?! I just don't believe the hype about Jim looking after Mia all the time I'm afraid. I know the quote sounds a bit dodgy too, so like scummy I hope she was just not being as eloquent (sp?) as usual!
Sorry for waffling, but sometimes its easier to gossip about famous people's lives than it is to deal with what's going on in your own (especially in my case!!)

Anyone got any more celebrity news??!

winnie · 14/01/2002 16:05

Lizzer, I actually agree with you. Many women (whatever their profession) return to work full time or part time before their baby is nine months old and their child has to have childcare. Would we condemn them or do we only criticise women who seem to have a choice and do a job they really love? As for the single parent comment well, good for her...

ancarra · 14/01/2002 18:58

Most mums I know go back to work far too early because they have to for financial reasons.I think a government ie uk who expects women to fully breast feed but have to go back to work when babies are three months old have a utopian attitude. If mums are expected to breast feed for a year then someone should pay the mortgage!!!!As for child care I always say you are only as reliable at work as your childcare. Many years ago my new carer didnt turn up on her first day no need to comment on the chaos it caused.Good luck all of you I am old enough to be a grandma now !!!!!

In Kate's defence, she is a very regular attendee at the same North London Crechendo class our son goes too. Quite impressive really when you consider how busy she must be.

Lizzer · 15/01/2002 22:27

Wow Bells, really! I'm impressed - see I knew she would be all hands on and involved, I just knew... The quote was sooo out of context

PS could you get her autograph for me Bells (joke!)

Tinker · 15/01/2002 22:45

Have to confess, I can't stand Kate Winslet so just wanted to quote her to be provocative!

OP posts:
ScummyMummy · 15/01/2002 22:49

Tut, tut, Tinker! I cannot condone postuing merely to be provocative. You are a disgrace, young lady.

ScummyMummy · 15/01/2002 22:49

ScummyMummy · 15/01/2002 22:50

So much so that I had to say so twice.

Lizzer · 15/01/2002 23:13

But why hate her Tinker? Irrational loathing or has she done something annoying to you? I like irrational loathing and am full of it for certain celebrities such as Posh, Geri, Ulrika Jonnson, The Appletons (obviously!), Liz Hurley (pregnant or not!) I could go on...!

Scummy, I agree - posting to be provocative is a terrible, shameful thing to do - I would never dream of it

Tinker · 15/01/2002 23:20

Lizzer - deffo irrational loathing! Find her a tad affected as well, but that's just my justification. Agree with you about Geri, Ulrika (don't get that one at all about her irresistability) and the Appletons, naturally.

But, irrationally, don't loathe Liz or Posh. However, Patsy Kensit falls into the "Why?" category also. As does Robbie bloody Williams. Oooo, feel myself warming to my theme now!

OP posts:
Tinker · 15/01/2002 23:41

Oh, how could I forget Gail Porter! But, maybe that's rational loathing.

bells2 · 16/01/2002 12:45

Lizzer would love to get her autograph but sadly its our Nanny rather than moi who attended Crechendo (so perhaps that makes me "grander" than Kate Winslet???).

Irrational loathing of celebs is a favourite past time of time - Liz Hurley and Nicole Kidman top my list!

Paula1 · 16/01/2002 13:19

But Bells2, Nicole Kidman seems really sweet and nice doesn't she?

TigerMoth1 · 16/01/2002 16:16

'Would I have said that? - Kate Winslet sets the record straight'

That's what it says on the front cover of this week's Time Out, next to a big picture of our Kate. Synchronisity or what?

Havn't read the article yet so may post again.

Lizzer · 16/01/2002 16:49

Oooo do tell tigermoth, I'm dying to know...!

Tinker, how could I have forgotten Patsy?! What a state she continually gets herself into...talk about having blinkers on! Gail gets my I.L. (irrational loathing) vote too - all stemming from her getting her kit off for lad mags phase. Now she's spawning? Gah!!

Now Nicole Kidman is a definite media user ('oh look at me I can dance out of my divorce court, I AM happy really, really!'But do feel a little sorry for her on the Tom Cruise front. But speaking from a tall person's point of view, 'its going nowhere if you can see their crown in your best heels' - is my motto!! (and believe me I've seen a lot of dandruff in my time )

Ooooo thanks for this thread Tinker!!

Lizzer · 16/01/2002 16:50

Sorry-unintentional overuse of smiley faces there - don't know where they came from??!!

TigerMoth1 · 16/01/2002 17:54

Lizzer, the headline I mentioned was to do with her weight. I quote

'As the most successful young actress in Britain, did you mean it when you said you'd never get cast again unless you lost weight?

"No, of course not. Would I say that?.....right to set the record straight. I was pregnant. I gained four stone. I gave birth th Mia.Weight does not drop off. So of course I am not going to get the parts I was getting before when I'm sitting around at 13 stone. Any woman who has a baby gains weight. You want to get back to where you were before. I got back to where I was. That's all it was....it's hard work and its boring."

Lizzer, while this comes across as a genuine answer to me, there's a small aside later in the piece (it's mostly promoting her role in the flim 'Iris'that doesn't ring so true IMO, namely:

"Where do you stand on the great Harry Potter v Lord of the Rings debate?

"Um, I havn't seen either of them yet. It's so hard to get out when you are a full-time mum..."

Hmmm Kate, no babysitters at all? ever, ever, ever? I just can't see it myself.

PS Lizzer, just read your news. Lucky you. I remember when I used to go on dates - sigh!
