Sorry, just loved this quote from the radiant Kate Winslet in the Independent today:

"Being a single mother is not remotely daunting. There's an instinctive strength that just kicks in. I didn't even get a nanny until she was nine months old. It's absolutely exhausting , but I wanted to experience all those thngs."

I like the "didn't even" bit. Wouldn't it be lovely to have a choice about wanting to experience exhaustion!

Eek! I see I have a little visitor: where did that winking face come from? I don't ever do them.

sis · 17/01/2002 12:37

I'm not a great Kate Winslet fan ( it's the affected bit for me too and the relentless cheerfulness - go on be a moody cow!!) but in her defence I would say that if you are working it is a bit difficult to do your own thing because of being torn betwwen doing our own thing in non-work time and going out. She didn't say it was impossible to go out, just that it was hard and I agree with that.

Marina · 17/01/2002 13:44

So hands up which of us mummies raced out to buy this week's Hello! (or is it OK!?) in which a galaxy of celebrity mums headed by Patsy Palmer tell us what it's really like to be a parent. I hope someone out there can provide us with some juicy quotes...and a good laugh away from the flaming working parent thread
I will say in defence of Ulrika-ka-ka that I think she has done a great job looking after a baby with a serious heart defect, and talked about it very honestly in the press.
Gail Porter though...as Polly Toynbee said about Tara P-T recently after an interview...what's she for?

Yes, the number of Patsy Palmer's children has been troubling me as well! And she always seems to be getting married.

Sis - can't have any of that reasoned 'in her defence' nonsense on here - straight out vitriol only.

Minnie Driver - Why?. Saw her on Parkinson once and she kept saying "absolutely" in a really drawn out way. Isn't that what people say when they have absolutely nothing to say?

Thanks Marina for clearing up the Gail Porter thingy. I've spent chunks in and out of the UK and I couldn't work out where my immediate loathsomeness came from.

I knew there was something about a bird with her kit off displayed on the House of Commons. However, I did not understand how that related to the wholesome Gail Porter I saw presenting some holiday programme were she went off hiking in the Scottish Highlands and didnae wash for a week and discovered pencillin.

Thanks for the tip off about the great OK spread.

I used to dislike Nicole Kidman for no rational reason. But then I saw "Moulin Rouge". And now I love her! (Well, think she's great, anyway). And that's just as irrational, but the film was sooooooo great. Saw it twice, would happily see it again, and again......

Admittedly haven't seen Moulin Rouge yet but basically I just think Nicole is a terrible actress - completely wooden in everything I have seen her in (except "To Die For". I also thought she seemed exceedingly dull on "Parky". Oh and aside from that, she's so damn skinny!.

Aw Bells, didn't you see her in Flirting? I thought this was easily John Duigan's best film.
And my sister (no kids, still goes out WHENEVER SHE WANTS and has just got back from romantic frosty break in Venice, ggrrrr) says her latent woodenness is just perfect in that ghostie film - The Others I think it's called.

winnie · 18/01/2002 10:37

Marina, oooohhhhh for a frosty break in Venice!

Ok Marina, you are right - Flirting was great. Hands up, it must be just her figure that I find so immensely irritating!

Marina · 18/01/2002 14:08

I will pick her brains Rozzy and get back to you. She said now is a great time to go because although it is not deserted, it is so much less busy than peak time.
Only gripes were that some restaurants they had hoped to try were closed for January, and some other landmark cafes etc were eye-poppingly pricy - £8 for a COFFEE in Florian's!
Bells, I like to think that if you stretched me on a rack, I might look like Nicole. She is infuriatingly lanky and elegant isn't she? However I'd still rather be a fat troll and not have spent the best years of my life having to sleep with Tom Cruise.

Joe1 · 18/01/2002 14:21

Marina, I agree, Tom Cruise, yuk. I find Nicol, Liz and like all very much look at me, look at me, LOOK AT ME.

Geri - sad sad sad. She is so sad, I almost feel sorry for her now. Or maybe not...

Did anyone see the David Cassidy thing last weekend? Mein Got! I fancied him all over again.
Very pretty.

Do you know who I really really can't stand.
Tracy Shaw. She is so full of it and she only has a bit part in corrie.
I mean can you remember any of her storylines exept for the whoose baby going on now.
She is constanlt in OK going on like she is a flaming film star.

sis · 18/01/2002 19:57

Oooh, okay Tinker for pure vitriol, it has to be Madge (aka Madonna) with the recent comments to justify her hunting and shooting activities. She is supposed to have said something along the lines of 'an animal respects you more if you have killed it yourself before eating the meat....'HELLO!? ANYONE IN THERE? the animal is dead - it is not interested in whether the person eating it is a hunter gatherer or a plain old consumer. Erm, did I mention that dh thinks the world of Madonna?

Also hate Jim Davidson and any other bigots going about disguised as comedians.

Joe1 · 19/01/2002 05:38

How talented Madonna is not only can she make lots of money she can communicate with the dead animals she is about to eat to see how they feel about it.
