How to find a new job in the internet age?

DP lost his job before Christmas so is now looking for a new one. He'd been in his previous job for 10 years and whilst I did move jobs about 3 years ago, that was through word of mouth so neither of us have been properly job hunting for a decade or more... during which its all changed! He's on LinkedIn & spoken to recruitment consultants in the relevant areas. Is there anything else he can do/should be doing? If it makes any difference, he's a well qualified professional so, for the time being at least, is looking for a similar position.

What type if job is he after? If in accounting/finance I can give you some ideas

twitter can an option - and I would strongly recommend looking at employers websites and applying direct, also get recommendations on linkedIn and probably pay for the jobseeker upgrade

If he's not doing this already, he should join appropriate groups on LinkedIn and get involved in discussions (and not just wait to be noticed).

Agree with housesale about Twitter - use #[job sector] or www.twitjobsearch.com.

Employers know graduates use social media so they do use it for recruitment.

Majority of Job boards replaced by job 'scrapers' like Indeed - just google for jobs and you will see

Job boards are the place to advertise for specialist sectors e.g. Guardian for public sector - using Google will soon show the ones that come up with the right jobs, then register for email alerts with the good ones

Targeting specific companies is now easier as they use their own websites to recruit. I have a list of links to my target employers' vacancies pages and each week I click through to each one. You can also register for job alerts on the good ones, and make speculative applications.

It's still all a bit sector specific though - getting out and talking to people in the field who've moved recently might help?

Thank you for this. We hadn't even thought of Twitter. I spent a lot of time of the internet over the weekend so now have a better idea of where & how to look and amazed DP with what I'd found as I think he thought registering with recruitment consultants was still the only way.
