Worldpay/sagepay

Hi. Haven't been on here for a while, but hope someone can help. I am adding a shop to my website, among many other changes, and want to accept payments online. I have previously been paid by customers by cheque, bank transfer or via paypal, but want to use something like worldpay or sage pay instead. I understand that I need a merchant account, and then a payment gateway. So far, World Pay seems easiest with a £75 set up charge, £15 per month, then transaction charges, but I wondered if anyone has used this, and if so, how they have found it?

Anyone who has used SagePay would be good to hear from too. I think I'd prefer to stick to one of the bigger ones, but any advice, especially from those who have done it before, would be great.

I use Sage Pay - and think they're excellent. Streamline (with discounted FSB rates) are my merchant bank.

I find Sage Pay's support very good. Have called them at 11 at night.

Hi Saffra. Thanks for that - do you mind me asking roughly what price you pay for a merchant account - happy with a ball park figure.

It's just some deals are £75 set up fee, then £15 a month, but a free merchant account. Some are £20 for everything, and no set up fee. Some are £20 a month but that doesnt include the merchant account.

And any other experiences would be good too.

I pay a monthly £25 fee to Sage Pay (www.sagepay.com/online-payments). This is for the payment gateway service.

I pay a % to Streamline (based on transactions for that month) and there was no joining fee.. These are FSB rates - have you looked at FSB? - but are also negotiated rates too (www.fsb.org.uk/card-processing)

When I looked into it when starting out, the FSB/Streamline rates were much more favourable compared with the likes of HSBC. Would recommend a look.

Why not PayPal?

PayPal is expensive if you are doing any kind of volume. Not the best for fraud detection/chargebacks either.

What, 1.4% + 20p all in? What are you getting with Streamline plus SagePay?

Agree on chargebacks, if your product is vulnerable to fraudulent chargebacks (i.e. can be easily resold on ebay/car boot sale/off the back of a lorry) you need to be careful.

Yes, FSB/Streamline rates are far more competitive. Don't have them to hand right now though, so can't tell you, but it's much more attractive than PayPal.

Rates aside, good support is v important plus access to 3rd man fraud screening - both of which SagePay provide.

These charges sound very expensive unless you are turning over £000's! What sort of businesses are you operating?

I have a kilt making business, specialising in baby and child kilts. My website designer is using Wordpress and woocommerce for the shop part.

My next question is, you can buy an extension of woocommerce for SagePay. How does at differ from buying it separately? It is 49 dollars to buy. Sage Pay was working out at £25 per month, or going with totalwebsolutions was a little cheaper, but I am waiting to see how much the merchant account with them is.

I basically don'tunderstand the buying Sage Pay for 49 dollars through woocommerce, or getting it myself through SagePay. Will I still have to pay 49 dollars to integrate it?

Hi conkertree. What you describe sounds like a full time business. In my spare time I operate a website for pet products with turnover about £1000 per month. £25 per month for SagePay would put me out of business! Slight exaggeration but it would be a chunk out of my profit.
