Facebook/Twitter and business promotion?

Hi I am going self employed and want to use FB/Twit to create some sort of marketing thing.
I have an OK web site and face book page but where do I go from here?
Someone I spoke to has 1700 followers and regularly receive e mails from people enquiring.
I am offering medical beauty treatments so will be able to put up some photos etc.
This person also ran a competition to drum up interest.
Are there any good books on the subject?

Just set up pages on both, follow as many relevant people/businessess as possible, see what they are doing/tweeting, get inspired. I would not bother with a book, just absorb yourself in it, read twitter for at least 10 mns at a time 3-4 times a day, see what people who are relevant to you are saying and doing, best way to learn. Follow companies and brands in similar fields etc.

Agree with carocaro entirely. I specialise in digital marketing and find that for small businesses, so many of the owners themselves are the best people to run their own strategy - the problem can then become time of course, but it is a great investment for you in the early days - remember quality over quantity too - as long as you are 'speaking' to the right demographic - your customers and potential new ones, you won't go far wrong!

Oh and please, please, please don't spam the shit out of your followers by sending them a Direct Message to "thank" them for following - they know they followed you, they clicked the feckin' button 15 seconds ago.
