Hi all, new to all this and first post on mumsnet. I have a three month old ds and was preparing to return to work as a director but was made edundant on Monday!! Although I am now financially better off for three months can't help feeling a bit lost, didn't realise how much of me was my job :( am looking for work to start in JUly, thinking of using my qualifications ansd being a social worker again but also feeling very de-skilled. I know about breast feeding and nappies so very scared!! Any advice, or just similar stories or just chat really :)

hello suecharlie, welcome to MN.

yes it can be a strange feeling being without the 'work' part of you, whether by design or, as in your case, by external events.
still, how nice to have a bit of a paid "cushion" of time, so you can look around for a job and take your time going back.
sorry,no advice or shared stories, just wanted to say hello.

My sister is a social worker, seems to have found an aspect she loves, Fostering & Adoption. Have you contacted your local County Council regarding jobs. www.jobsgopublic.com can be a good place to start looking for council based jobs, as many now list via that portal.

hi suecharlie and welcome to MN. I am so sorry to hear about the redundancy - I can empathise with you as I too was made redundanct about a year and a half ago and it was a strange 'hollow' feeling and like you, I was a bit taken aback at how much of my self identity i had tied into my job.

Like a lot of mumsnetters before and since my redundancy, I now think that the redundancy was the best thing to have happened to me as I am now much, much happier - both in my new part-time (hurray!) job and, as a by-product of that, in my personal life too.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
