Are new job vacancies supposed to be advertised internally?

I work part time in a nursery where one of our volunteers has just been given full time paid hours. No mention was given that a full time position had opened up and I really wanted full time hours when they were available.
Just wondering if it should've been advertised internally or not.

No, the law doesn't get involved in recruitment unless there is any discrimination involved, so its entirely the employer's decision whether to advertise internally or not.

Did your manager not know you were after more hours?

Yes she did but DD and DS are at nursery with me and there wasn't room for them on the extra days. It would've been nice to have been given the option to apply as I could've sorted additional childcare for the 1 extra day.

OK well all you can do is tell your manager you were disappointed as you would love to have been considered for the full time role, and ask her to bear that in mind next time.
