WWYD: Job application - haven't heard anything.

I applied for an academic-related University job a few weeks ago.
I was told I would be contacted after the closing date of 2nd Oct.

Last week (so, 2 weeks after the closing date) I phoned the woman I sent the application to (the PA for the group) just to ask how my application was progressing. She said she though they were sending out emails that day.

I have heard nothing. I am really, really bad at waiting for stuff like this! I just want to know one way or the other.

I don't think I should chase it up again, should I? Am I right in thinking that to follow-up after an interview might be viewed as assertive, enthusiastic etc, to do so before interview just looks pushy and aggressive and won't change the outcome.

My analysis of the situation Wink leaves me thinking they've contacted the interview candidates and are waiting for their responses before either asking B-list candidates, or sending out rejection letters.
