How do I go about getting some independent typing for money?

Did that make sense? Basically, I already have a full time job, but I'd like to earn a bit of extra money by doing some typing, from a dictaphone casette, or something like that. Anyone got any ideas where I would start with this? How do I find out if there is anyone about who needs/would be willing to pay me to do this?

What about hitting your local Uni or college, put up a notice on the student boards advertising that you can type up there work for them. Should be plenty of work available especially as it is coming up to dissertation submission (generally about May), so some students might be wanting typing done.

Thanks for your reply, Poppy.

I did actually think about that, but thinking back to my own uni days, my notes and draft essays were generally a complete mess and I'd be worried about not being able to make sense of it/understand messy handwriting. Whad'ya think? Maybe that was just me! Grin

You can also put a notice up in your local newspaper shop, mine only charges about 30p for a card a month to advertised anything.

Market research companies use transcribers - you basically listen to a tape of an interview and type out a transcript in word - dead easy but mind numbingly boring!! I work in the pharmaceutical field so some are very technical (I don't do transcribing btw, I just know about it!) but I'm sure consumer MR companies do it too.

You could either approach the companies directly or you could work via an Agency.

put an ad in the local paper. i did this once and got loads of responses-i didn't actually take any of them up at the time though as found i was too busy with the babies! (just watch out for the "sex line" people who will want to offer you all sorts of work!!!)
