Returning company assets

I have handed in my notice for my field-based job. I have been signed off work for the past 7 weeks with stress- major anxiety when it comes to anything to do with the job due to systematic bullying at all levels.

I have just received an email telling me that I will need to drive my company car to head office (4 hours away) in order to return all of the equipment. I know for a fact that when people have been made redundant the company have arranged for the car to be picked up. When the cars are delivered too (even if they're just pool cars that are held at head office) they are driven down to your home address.

Considering I have been signed off work until the end of my notice period, can they really demand that I drive up there? Having to go to head office would really set off my anxieties and probably lead to a panic attack. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In your position I'd reply stating very politely that you are unable to travel as you are unwell but are happy for someone to collect the assets from you at a pre-arranged time.

Thank you hairy.

I phoned acas and they said to check my contract. My contract says I have to return it to head office but im signed off sick so don't know whether that changes things.

The man at acas wondered why they would want me to be driving their car for 4 hours when im not fit to work.

I wouldn't be driving for 4 hours to return it, then presumably taking public transport back home.

I agree, a polite e-mail stating you are currently signed off sick, and are therefore too unwell to deliver the car, but happy for someone to collect it.

Sorry to hear you are going through this.
