Repercussions for Not Attending Course on Day off...

I work 3 days a week & very soon there is a 2 day course with an over night stay. I don't work on the first day, but am happy to go for the evening meal, stay overnight & participate in the course the next day.

I have explained this to my manager. The message I am recieving today is attendance is expected on both days.

As well as childcare issues for this day, I also have a hospital appointment (I have to go twice a week) scheduled.

Should I just bite the bullet (which I am loathe to do) & go, or not ?

TIA for any info

I would go and take a day off in lieu if that is at all possible for you

LadySherlockofLGJ · 14/03/2006 12:59

I would go, they are offering training.

I can see why they want you there both days so from that angle I would try and go. What to me is more critical is the issue of your hospital appointments and whether these can be safely rescheduled. If not, present these as your overriding reason for non-attendance on the first day.
But, from my limited experience of residential courses, turning up midway through is never as good a training experience for you, and can possibly also disrupt the training experience for the group as a whole.

thanks ladies - interesting comments - hadn't considered the effect on others.

yes - I will go, I'm just annoyed about it. It's only a day...............(grrrr!)

I think if you are given equal training as a part time worker then that is a very positive thing from employers. Too often part time is not considered at all for training.

Sparklemagic · 15/03/2006 09:28

anniemac, what are you training to be?? Angels??? I wouldn't go anywhere for work unless I was paid!!!!

I got really annoyed last year, as there is a conference that we are expected to attend every year(involves quite a few lectures on new inovations). However, we are also expected to still run a service at work, so last year I was asked to come in to work on my day off,to cover for those attending the conference as we did not have enough people in work.I happily agreed to this as I had been myself the year before.
On the day of the conference I discovered that another member of staff, who should have been in work was allowed to take the day off(he's full time). My boss apparently said it was alright as I was coming in to work.Angry
It was my Fing day off they should have told me not to come in if I wasn't needed.

This year when asked if I was covering,I stated what happened last year and said I wouldn't be working unless going on the conference myself.

I'd watch how often you are asked to do this, and don't let it become a habit.

Hi ladies, thanks for the input Smile

It isn't really training - it's a bit of a 'jolly' . There are a few lectures on the first day, a dinner (with a rubbish menu Grin) & then 'workshops' the next day.

It's a bit of a 'see & be seen'.

Yes, I am biting that bullet & going !! Hope I have a good hair day & it shows I am commited

This sort of thing really annoys me. I work half time yet I am "expected" to go to training courses on my day off - would a full time person be expected to attend on Saturday and Sunday? Where I work, they don't want to pay me extra and it is often impossible to get a day off in lieu.

Really piddles me off. Just cos we are part time we have to lump it. Often these courses are cr*p anyway, just an excuse for a booze up and a free meal. I don't need to eat anymore than I already do.

Grin that's exactly how I feel !
