Pregnancy and work contract - help!

I am looking for advice on whether if i got pregnant during my 12 month contract...i would risk not being kept on after this? I have been assured (with no mention of babies!) that i would be kept on for a further contract and maybe permanent ( i know this means nothing until its written and signed) but would they really be able to not renew my contract??

Well there's no obligation on an employer to renew a contract, but if the reason for not renewing was pregnancy, that would be illegal discrimination.

So if you announce your pregnancy and then they mysteriously don't renew your contract even though there is still a job that needs doing and your performance has been good, then that would potentially be dodgy.

hmmm i thought so....the job would still need doing, but i dont trust that they wouldnt possibly change the name of the role to get around that one!
