Covering letter & application form

I am just completing an application form which can be submitted via post or email, I have read in a lot of recruitment bumf that a covering letter shoudl alos be sent, is this something that is still done/do I need to do this??

I would say: only if it says so! Read the instructions twice over so you get it right - I've just received in a slew of applications today, several of which were sent to the wrong person/exceeded the specified page limit & etc. Very frustrating for the recruiter.
