Holiday question

Hi
Could someone help with working out holiday allowance please just want to double check all correct and ok.

Usually 20 days per year. Started employment yesterday 23rd July. Holidays run jan-Dec

Do you work out the holiday entilement based on full months so aug - Dec.
So 20 divide in to 12months gives 1.66 x 5 months gives 8.3333 so round up to 8.5??? what about the 2 weeks worked in July should that be used in the calculation?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks :)

Well, we would normally work out the entitlement for the full months that will be worked, then for the portion of the partial month & add them together.

So:

20 days / 12 x 5 = 8.333
20/12 = 1.666 / 31 days x 9 = 0.48 OR: 20/12 = 1.666 / 22 working days x 9 = 0.53

Total leave entitlement 9 days rounded up.

But, it depends what your employers usual practice is.

You do need to account for the 1 week worked in July. There are 23 weeks from Monday 23rd July - Monday 31 Dec, so I would have thought you are due 23/52 = 44% of your holiday, which is 8.8 days which would normally be rounded up to 9.

The other way to do it is by months as you have then add 0.25 of a months' allowance (0.415) which gives 8.75 days.
