most of dept being made redundant apart from managers

We'veknown for a while that redundancies were going to be on the cards and have just found out that nearly the while department is being made redundant, including the managers jobs, but that there are two new rules being created which are for the two managers whose posts have been made redundant.

Is this right? In my mind if there are new posts created and a while team have their jobs at risk then surely everyone has the right to apply for them. Is it really right that they can create new jobs for specific people and not let anyone else apply?

I work for a large well known organisation so I presume they would have made sure what they are doing is above board so they don't get into trouble but it doesn't seem fair to me.

Anyone with any experience of employment issues like this??

Yes. If the new roles are reasonable equivalent posts at managers grades it's fine.

As hairy says, it depends on the roles. It's fine to 'ring-fence' roles to a set group of people at risk if others at risk wouldn't be suitable for them any way.

If they are at management level and therefore higher level of responsibility, higher salary ec, then they would probably not be considered a 'suitable alternative' for the rest of the team anyway.

Thanks for your replies, I'd guessed it must be allowed because otherwise they wouldn't be able to do it. I suppose it just seems unfair because there are also other people at management level in other depts also being made redundant and they can't apply for the two jobs, and also there is one person who I think would be really good for the job, he's not at management level at the minute but he's done a similar role in a previous job but he's not even being allowed to apply.
