Try to be vague so as not to upset FIL.

He was made redundant over a year ago now so has been job hunting. Yesterday he applied via the phone to an advert looking for 'experienced x' When asked about his experirnce he said he had 25 years relavent experience.. They said sorry you are too old then, we can't accept your application.

No that is not legal you cannot be discriminated against for age, gender, sexuality or race. The only exceptions are you can advertise jobs as (eg) female only to work in a women's refuge etc.

If they had said he can't apply because hes a woman or not British white or is homosexual there would be uproar. Not sure what you would want to do though as I don't think you can go to tribunal as he isn't employed by them and would he really want to fight for an interview for a company like that?!

Definitely not legal. You cannot ask someone's age or discriminate based upon it. Was it an agency or the firm itself that your FIL spoke to?

The firm I think but I wasn't there. Nothing we can do just annoyed at it when job hunting is hard enough as it is these days.
