If two offices merge?

Hi, just wondering if anyone with a bit of HR knowledge can throw some light on my question. Another office may be coming to merge at my location to reduce overheads etc.. The person who does the same job as myself has worked for the firm a few years longer than myself, so would she automatically get preference to keep her job? I'm sure that's the way it would go but can't help feel it's slightly unlucky when I am in situ at the remaining location and have to lose my position to allow the person from the closing site to keep hers?

Any advice welcome.

No, it does not automatically mean that she will get the job. Your employers must come up with a fair and, as far as possible, objective way of deciding who gets made redundant. They can use length of service but this may be indirect age discrimination.
