Er, I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand your post. Can you explain further or post a link or something?

AMumInScotland · 13/06/2012 21:28

Some do, some don't. I work in the public sector and we have foreign nationals (EU and others) there.

DuelingFanjo · 13/06/2012 21:31

Sorry if I wasn´t clear... my question is if the public sector employes foreign nationals or the jobs offered are exclusive to UK citizen.

Many public sector jobs ads specify people who have permission to work in the UK. The NHS and education will recruit abroad if there are shortages in particular areas - not sure what the current situation is though.

EdithWeston · 13/06/2012 22:25

No, not exclusive, though there are some exceptions.

Everyone, if employed in the UK, has to have the legal right to live and work here (obviously!). If employed by the Crown overseas, they must have the right to live and work in that location.

There are restrictions on some jobs which require vetting - if that is a condition of employment, the criteria will be laid out alongside the application process. I think there are also restrictions on the Armed Forces.

The vast majority of public sector jobs have no nationality restrictions whatsoever.

BeingFluffy · 13/06/2012 22:26

I work as a civil service and a lot of jobs in my Dept are restricted to British nationals because of the nature of the job - I believe this is a legal requirement. Some jobs are open to everyone, I think it depends on the Dept. Quite a few colleagues are British but they, their parents or grandparents originally emigrated here from another part of the globe.

I´m foreign national, not EU, and I have pernission to work in UK. I really like public policy and would like to work in public sector. Can I?

Yes, definitely in the sector I am in (higher education); I would imagine in others too. Getting the jobs is not easy at the moment though.

Have you considered checking the adverts for the jobs you might apply for?
