I'm a nurse at a school. I have been on maternity leave and am due back in July. There is a teaching assistant at the school who 20yrs ago was a nurse. She is not registered with the NMC. The school recruited her as "the nurse" while I was off and arranged temp cover for the TA post.

They have since made the cover TA permanent. This scared the TA covering me and she asked me to do a job share as nurse with her as her old post had been given away. Her plan was to work part time and do her return to nursing course at uni.

I agreed to the idea of a job share and made a flexi working request suggesting this.

My employer refused my request via email today. Stating the lady who would job share doesn't want to and the uni course she wants to do she could complete without working part time ie they would give her time off to do it.

I spoke to the lady and she said the employer has said she can complete her uni course. Why would they want a TA to complete a nursing course if they are expecting me to return? It all seems a bit suspicious.

Also my employer told me on a previous visit to the school that if I didn't want to come back I only had to give 8 weeks notice.

I have had no problems at work good appraisals overhauled the whole system and good relationship with parents.

The main issue is I am paid about £15000 a year more than her.

not much help for you but this TA is doing your job to your job description and is practising as a nurse? I'd be seeking advice and reporting her and the school to the NMC tbh.

Thank you. I had suggested she could cover me as first aided but highlighted to school she wasn't a registered nurse. I was very surprised when I found out they were calling her the school nurse tbh.
