Temp Contracts

I work 7 hours a week for my employer on a permanent contract but also 10 hours a week on a temp contract (temp contract given to me when they decided to close on Saturdays and I lost some of my permanent hours).

I have had a 3 month, a 6 month and now a 2 month temp contract and now they say they will not be giving me any more contracts as even though I do a good job and the work is still there, they would not have to make the hours into a premanent role and they don't want to do that.

I am going to ring ACAS but wondered if anyone know if what they are doing is legal?

Thanks.

If it's a temporary contract and they honour until the end of the temp contract, there isn't a thing you can do about it.

I was on a rolling 4 month contract when I (finally) told my enployer I was pregnant. Overnight, my contract had been cancelled and they employed a new person within a fortnight to do the same job (though on a permanent basis, which they had been talking to me about).

They honoured my contract until the end of the last 4 months (which at least meant I was paid until my due date) but there wasn't a thing I could do about it, even though it was obvious to anyone and everyone that the reason they'd done it was to get out of having to deal with maternity leave / pay etc.,

How long have you worked for them? And when they changed your permanent 17 hour contract to permanent 7 hour and temporary 10 hour contracts what consultation did they do, were you the only employee affected and how was the change made?

Contrary to the other post, employees on fixed term contracts have the right to redundancy and to be protected from detrimental treatment the same as all employees.

Katie - I'm watching with interest. It's 4 years ago now, so nothing I can do about it (or would even want to) but I was told that as long as they honoured the current temp contract (which they did, even though I was pretty much doing nothing for the last 2 months) there was nothing I could do. I was never on a permanant contract though.
