nine day fortnight?

Has anyone worked this? My job involves a long commute. My request to do a four day week was refused. I then suggested compressed hours over four days a week, also refused. The boss seemed puzzled by compressed hours, so I explained it with the example of someone who does, say 4.5 days over 4 days. Somehow he thought I was asking for a 4.5 week, and he suggested Friday afternoons off. And he said he would think about it. I am wondering if it would make more sense to have every other friday off to cut down on the commute and to avoid a sense of "popping" into the office for a morning every week ie. either be there a full day or not.

Not me personally but the large and unwieldy company I work for did you used to have 9 day fortnights for engineers - Although they might have done 9 days on the trot and then had 5 days off - not really sure.

It seems crazy to commute a long distance just for a morning. I would push him for every other Friday off.

Not much help, sorry. Maybe repost in the employment topic?
