returning to work as a computer programmer

is there anyone out there who used to be a programmer (preferably Java) and who would return to work if they could start on a part-time basis or school term dates only?

We are a small s/ware house with lots of Mums and are trying to recruit graduate trainees. A Mum here suggested that there could be trained Mums out there who would love to return to programming on a part-time basis, so this is just a dipping of the toe in the water to see if there's a reaction.

I'm currently doing a second degree with a focus in computing/IT and am taking a number of Java modules. Just from my own perspective, whilst I'm planning to look for a full-time position at the end of my study, it would be great if I could find a part-time or term-time basis as it would cut out a significant proportion of my childcare costs. I would definitely find that appealing.

Hmm, I used to do .net (c#) and was trained in java
Might be something id consider. What about other skills?

I think that's an excellent idea Loulow.

I was working as a programmer for a supermarket in the late 90's and there was a great shortage of COBOL programmers needed to help fix the Millennium Bug. They recruited quite a few female programmers who worked hours to fit in with the school drop off and pick-up.

Great idea!!

I am a Java programmer on maternity leave at the moment. I am thinking of going back to work after the summer, would love to do part time if I can but don't think my current job will allow it.

I have 6 years experience working for national newspapers websites.

Part time / term time would be good. Would you offer remote working, or does it have to be office based?

SweetGrapes · 25/04/2012 22:21

I used to be a Java developer (6 years good experience). But have been at home for 7 years now. Did a freelance project in Nov-Dec to see if i can still do it (and I can, with a little help from google).
Have been looking for work since then. Have another interview tommorow for a test role (Selenium in Java).
Would love to program on a part time basis.

What a fantastic idea! I'm no longer a programmer but if I still was I'd be in there like a shot. You should also contact Women Like Us org.

I am a software engineer, I would have loved to return part time (and just term time would have been fantastic!) but had to return full time as that was all that was advertised.
