possible to have an either/or flexible working request?

As you are only allowed to make one flexible working request a year, I was wondering what would happen if your request was turned down and you wanted to modify it? Does that count as another request? Or would it be an idea to put in a request with a preferred option but suggested alternatives? What have other people done?

I was told to put in a request, if it's turned down then appeal offering the other solution as a compromise. Although, I never put this into practice as decided to be a SAHM instead!

The meeting they hold with you to discuss your request will give both parties the opportunity to discuss options and alternatives.

I would word it so that your request explicitly mentions the possibilities for an onwards negotiation for alternatives (which would probably come up anyhow, as hairy says).

Start with a statement that this is a request for flexible working.

Then say what you ideally want, and add supporting information about why this is possible.

Then conclude with a statement that if your proposed arrangement cannot be accommodated exactly, you are open to discussions to find a mutually agreeable alternative.
