Contacting headhunters through LinkedIn

I've decided I need to move on from my current job. I am connected to a few headhunters through LinkedIn and thought this should be my first step - can anyone advise me what the normal procedure is?

Is it better to email them with my CV or send a message through Linked In first? Have updated my profile, although not as much detail on there as on my CV.

Many thanks.

I've been contacted by recruitment agents through linkedin. A lot of them have ads on their page so if you befriend one you can see them although unless you adjust your privacy settings everyone else can then see you're job hunting.

They should be able to get enough detail from your linkedin profile so sending a message sounds fine.

hi.. skimming through threads about LinkedIn..
I've just updated my profile and have seen to upgrade its quite a bit of money (to me) each month. can you still contact people or people view you without upgrading ?
am new I it all, having graduated 8 years ago and now looking else were for work. are there any other goo sites to put a cv on or is LinkedIn the best one?

I work in IT and recently went to a talk by a smallish IT Recruitment agency. It seems that LinkedIn is the first place that that particular company goes to when looking for likely candidates for particular jobs. Apparently most of the bigger recruitment firms sell access to their own candidate databases to the smaller firms, but LinkedIn is cheaper for them.

So my recommendation is to treat LinkedIn like its an online CV, really do a lot of work on selling yourself in your profile. Also check if agencies have a link to LinkedIn in their webpages, I'm fairly sure I've seen this. And look on twitter, the agency I mentioned above routinely tweets about its vacancies.
