You just fill a form in with the charities code off the HMRC website and they get the money.

Think you've got the wrong end of the stick there. You can donate any rebate due to you through self assessment, to charity. Not the tax you owe HMRC.

Yup, sadly it's just any money that HMRC end up owing you after you've paid your 6 monthly installments (which are just estimates) and then done your final return ...
