Redeployment - negotiating part-time hours. Please help.

My department is in the process of being closed down and I have 3 months to apply for other roles in the company or I will be made redundant. I really can't afford this as my redundancy payment is a pittance, but with the whole department going there are nearly 20 others in the same position, not to mention people from other areas already on the redeployment list, so competition is fierce.

I work part time and have been told that it is up to me to negotiate part time hours when applying for other roles - I feel that this makes redundancy even more likely but what can I do?

I have just spoken to the head of a department with a job going that I would really really like, but he basically said, unofficially, that I wouldn't get it as it was a full time role.

If I was already doing that job, went on maternity leave and wanted to come back part time, I'm pretty sure they would let me - so how can I best convince them to consider me?

I work 2 days at the moment, but could do 3, and I am totally flexible as to which days I work - they don't even have to be the same days each week.
I suspect the issue is that because it's a redeployment post, they will almost certainly have to train someone completely, and if they took me on they'd have to train two people.

Any suggestions to help me with this?

Sorry, that was considerably longer than I hoped :)
