I have recently completed my degree and applied for a job with the NHS. I was successful with my application and was offered a fixed term contract . I have since discovered that i am pregnant was a little bit shocked to say the least. Now i really need and want this job ,do i have to tell my employers that i am pregnant before i start the post? Would i be entitled to maternity leave?

when are you starting the job and how far are you along - if its soon and not very -then I would wait until you start - and tell them at the normal time eg after 12 weeksor so - as I understand it re employment law they can take back the job offer anyway - if you are not starting the job for a while then it might worth mentioning before hand - not sure about NHS maternity leave- I would find that out once you start

Thanks for your reply. I will be about 12 weeks when i start the job.

I think you'd be entitled to stat MP which is 6 weeks at 90% then SMP for up to 9 months. You definitely won't get the enhanced package (speaks from bitter experience!). You'd definitely be entitled to the leave, but you need to consult them on the financial side.

Actually I just checked and it looks as though if you are pg when you start work you're not entitled to SMP but might be able to maternity allowance. Sorry.

I found out I was PG about three days before starting with a new company. I couldn't have SMP, but was able to claim Maternity Allowance.

depends on the organisation through - I don't know about the NHS - some places you get maternity pay however long you have worked there - others you have to have worked a year

I found out I was pregnant just after getting a job, and started at about 13 weeks. I told them when I was about 20 weeks, and they were fine, there were a few raised eyebrows but there is no obligation to tell them til you're about 24 weeks.

I would check on maternity allowance eligibility - I had to prove I'd worked for a certain amount of time before my pregnancy. If you weren't eligible you could maybe take a shorter maternity leave period - I know people who've had to go back early and managed.
