Need help with notice period

I took the job I'm in currently after being made redundant from my last position. I've taken a pay cut and a little bit of a change of direction and although I've worked ehre for a year and enjoyed it, I want to get back to doing something similiar to what I was doing before.

When I applied for the job, the application forms said that I had to give one months notice, but my contract says that I have to give two months notice.

I'm not doing a high paid job so I don't know why my notice period is so long. I'd rather give a months notice, but don't know if I could fight this as it's been written into my contract. Does anyone have any advice or similar experiences?

Thanks

You can't "fight" your contractual notice period, no. But when you come to resign you can ask your employer if they will release you early. Many will as there's little point forcing someone who really doesn't want to be there to stay ages.
