How do job shares work please?

I'm interested in a role which is a job share. Both shares are vacant. How does it work in terms of deciding who works which part of the week, how the relationship between sharers works etc. I know someone who could do it with me (although haven't mentioned it yet) so if she was interested, could I present us as a package deal? Interested in others experience. TIA.

job shares are quite rare but can work well - depends on sharers and the role of course - think both applying would be good - re working out when working what was done before do you know - and do you think would work in your case?

Thanks AON. It's a new role, so there's nothing to follow which could be a good and bad thing! Just wondering what the pitfalls etc might be.

Capability Jane have a tool kit for job sharers which should try to take a look at as am sure would help.

From my experience in recruiting new members of staff (I am quite often involved in advertising and recruiting to roles at my work), there is often confusion about job share. If the role is full time then the application for that role should be for the fulltime hours. If you put in an application for the role on a job share basis, you would need to apply with the person you will job share with and explain who will do what hours. I used to get people applying for fulltime roles and just saying they wanted to do part time hours and assumed that they could do that calling it a job share application. That is not job share! There is no obligation on the part of the employer to find someone to take the other hours. Having said all of this, I would say contact the employer to confirm how they take applications as I can only tell you what my company does.
