Hi,

Oh God, I thought I had left the bitching days at school but sadly not. I need advice on how to handle this situation. When my employer recruited my position (deputy mgr) they also recruied a project assistant. Now the girl got the project assistant role went for my job initallyto be turned down.

Work was going really well when I was there and they were fine about me being pregnant etc. Indeed my boss was really happy with me. The other girl is fantastic too. So good indeed that I suggested her as my temp replacement.

Now this girl had a lot of stregnth in admin but she tends to rub lots of the long serving staff up the wrong way. Since I have been on my mat leave there has been a lot of splits in the team,so much so my boss has been at her whitts end confiding in me.

It appeared that my job share with other people have been making this girls life hard- so I remained neutral and a shoulder for my boss- explaining that in our line of work rifts are easily caused but we have to remain a team etc. My boss explained that a member of the team (preson A) had filed a complaint against another (person B) for bullying.

Although Im on maternity leave I do keep in touch days and went to a staff meeting which all the staff were saying they cant wait for me to return etc. In this meeting my replacement stormed out. My boss explained later it was because she thought the team were talking over her etc.

The problem seemed to have faded and all seemed well but tragically my replacement's mum died suddenly over christmas. I texted her enquiring how her mum was as on my keep in touch day she said her mum was a bit ill and she told me the news.

ANYWAY I phone work this week and speak to person A about something else entirleyand she confides in me that her complaint was against person B and my replacement as they were bad mouthing both of us. Indeed my replacement was saying how bad I was at my role and critising my spelling (she knows Im dyslexic).
Person A said it was so bad a different member of staff had already warned my replacement that if she continues to bitch about me hje would make a formal complaint.

My boss aparently knows about this and has said nothing. She is also retiring in 2 years and person A confided she is terrified of my replacement getting the job.

I am at a loss- my replacement has been frosty sometimes but I put it down to stress. I dont kow how to move forward with this. Im on maternity leave and just dont know whos word to trust. Person A is v honest and has asked me to check her story- obviously I also dont want to cause any added stress to my replacement

It does all sound a bit childish in an 'office politics' kind of way.

I'm not sure that you actually need to do anything as such - you are on maternity leave, you are being kept in the loop via your KIP days, presumably you have an idea/have already agreed a return to work date to your existing position and this will go ahead as planned?

Person A has made a complaint which should be dealt with in accordance with the company's grievance procedure.

Person A is terrified of yor replacement getting your manager's job when it comes up - this is 2 years away, a lot can happen in that time so no point worrying about this now IMO.

Enjoy the remainder of your ML with your LO, keep attending meetings etc wherever you can so you are kept up to date and then go back to work as planned.

Happy New Year!

thanks it is all a bit office politics- and the ironic thing is I never get involved in any of it when I'm at work. I'm just going to return in Feb and ask my boss to give me the low down on what I need to know.
Thanks I feel better now I've got it out f my system

Chill. All this grubby politicking will make them want you back more. Far far more terrifying to be in a position where everything improves the minute you disappear on OML....

Relax, go back, deal with any of it that you need to then.
