i've been with my employer for four years, returning part time last year from maternity leave. i work in a busy pub, 16hours a week, (6.30pm-11.30pm, 9.30am-3.30pm and 6.30-11.30 again). recently they have begun deducting 20mins pay for each 6hour shift for breaks. but most of us cant take breaks, because we are so busy ALL the time or dont want to because we have no here to go away from customers. i thinks its really unfair to do this all of a sudden. smokers nip out for a smoke if its quiet and other people run accross tothe shop and then have to grab a bite here and there between jobs.the only people who can sit and have a meal are the manager, her boyfriend (who works there) and the assistant manager who all have access, and use an office. we also are open until 11pm week night, the law states we have to give 20minutes for custmers to leave (11.20) but we also have to do the cleaning, (and our manager wants us to wait until she is ready to lock up) so we dont leave until 11.50 at the earliest, but still only get paid to 11.30. on weekends the bar is open until 12, they get paid til 12 but dont leave until at least 1am. surely they cant do these things?????we dont have and have been refused a clocking in and out system or timesheet system, instead altering our rota as we go but its ignored

This is clearly illegal. Maybe have a look at www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_money/employment_index_ew/rights_to_pay.htm and see if you can glean anything useful - there's also some info on this site (if you follow a few links) about the correct procedure for dealing with problems at work. Good luck with this. In my experience, confronting employers about dodgy working practices has usually just lead to the management making my life hell as payback for having dared stand up for myself Xmas Angry
