has anyone requested a job share and succeeded

Hiya

Was wondering if anyone returning from mat leave asked if their job role could be job shared, if so what was the outcome and how did you convince your employer, have decided that I may try this route. thanx for any advice and hope you all had a good new year

is it tried and tested anywhere else in the firm? Boss may need some persuasion if you are setting a precedent.

I did - although I work for the NHS, and they are a lot more flexible than a lot of other employers. I think legally you now have the right to request a job share, and they have to consider it.
There are obviously jobs that are not suitable to share, but are there similar jobs to yours in your industry elsewhere that are being shared successfully? Perhaps you could use them as an example.
Offer to be as flexible as possible on terms of the hours you would be willing to work, and go armed with facts re holidays etc from your personnel dept, or I think the job centre can point you in the right direction (maybe check out some websites also?)

what sort of place do you work for? how specialist is your job? do you manage people?

In my firm, it depends on the position - secretarial jobs are commonly job shares and I assume it would not be a problem to grant flexible working requests to job share because the firm frequently advertises secretarial job shares internally and externally. But for my professional position, the firm was only willing to consider if I could find the other job share internally myself ie hook up with someone with similar role/skills and complementary needs - of course, that never happened!

I asked to jobshare my own job, and had a jobshare partner (known to my bosses) all lined up, but was still met with much humming and haaing and wringing of hands; I ended up offering to jobshare with another mother returner, doing her job, which was my fallback position - not ideal, but better than nothing. In other words, I offered the organisation massive flexibility and all the help I could possibly supply! I even had a letter from a woman very senior and well-known in my field endorsing the value and do-ability of jobsharing. (I suppose I'm saying be well-prepared, and be ready to be flexible.)

well i've just written my appeal letter as they refused me when i wrote and asked to do part time hours and I've put in a bit about job sharing (fingers crossed) I've offered to be very very flexible, there is another girl off on maternity leave at the mo but she did have a better paid job than me so I can't really see her wanting to join a job share with me, will be interesting to see if she is turned down for flexible working tho, if you've read my other thread I'm annoyed coz i'm the only women coming back from mat leave who have been denied part time hours, everyone else has been offered alternatives if they can't have their old job back, I think someone wants me out, looking back tho at a night out I did say to my my that I couldn't just stop at having one baby, god I hope thats not being held against me

I have begun to jobshare after going back after mat leave. I teach, so I dont know if this is different to other jobs - but my boss told me she didnt have the option of saying no, even though she wasnt keen on the idea. I linked up with another teacher at the school, but we both had to compromise on what we wanted to make it work.

Shellybelly - you may find the other girl is willing to share. If it means she can keep her job and go part time she may not worry about the difference in salary too much.
