I'm about to start a new job with a good deal of project management in it (running a research project) what have been the best things you have learnt about project management?

Keep a log of risks, issues and decisions. Excel is fine.

Kerrymumbles gives good advice. Just to add to that, you are not the decision maker. You can influence and give your own opinion, but keep a good record of who makes key decisions and when. it could save your arse later on.

E mail is your friend for keeping track of things, use it to get key stuff in writing. However, nothing can replace good old face to face contact.

Lastly, if you can, get a mentor. Books, training (Prince 2, APMP) are all very good but the best way to learn is on the job and by getting the benefit of someone else's experience.

Many thanks, one of my targets is to get a mentor so will defo look into that when I get settled. Been on days training and communication seems to be key. Clear roles as well.
