Can anyone recommend any agencies that can supply virtual assistant work please? Also does anyone have any experience of this sort of work and if so how do / did you find it?

Hi lavand, I work with a VA and I found her at oDesk. oDesk is a huge marketplace for freelancers and you can post your VA services there. Another option is Elance. You can also post VA services there and get several offers and then you can choose one if you find one that you like. :)
