Whether to register for Self Assesment?

My DH is employed full-time but is also trying to start his own business on the side. Does he need to register for self-assessment? I understand that we need to let HMRC know for tax purposes but everything I can see about SA on the HMRC website talks about being self-employed, although I suppose technically he isn't.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Yes. He needs to be registered for self-assestment for the work outside of his job. A friend has a job and does stuff on the side, he is completes a self-assestment form.

He is both employed (his job) & self employed (trying to start his own business)

He should register now as his current expenses to set up his business are allowable against the tax he pays in his other job (in a sort of weird HMRC way)

Thanks. I was going to look at the online registration form to see if I could work it out but it's unavailable until Tuesday. Will get him to register then.
