Anyone know about tax and teenager's jobs?

Do teenagers pay tax? how much do you have to earn before paying tax? Is it straight away?

DD started a new job last month and her payslip shows she has paid tax (a whole £6 out of the £32 she earnt).

Is that right?

How old is she?

oh sorry. she is 15.

job is 1.5 hrs one week and 3 hrs the next.(£5.50 per hour)

She shouldnt pay any tax if she is only earning 32 a week, regardless of her age, sorry misread.
Her employer has obviously taken tax manually as wages software wouldnt have deducted, get her to mention it to her employer or ring hmrc

Any individual can earn (i think) around 85 ish before paying tax, all my staff work too many hours to fall below the threshold, so i cant remember exactly but its much more than your dd is earning.

it was £32 for 3 shifts. Will get her to ask them about it.

I disagree with Byeckerslike. It sounds to me like the employer has got this right.

Your daughter obviously doesn't have a P45. If she hasn't completed a P46 (or didn't get return it in time for the payroll run) her employer should use tax code BR which means that she will pay tax at 20% on all her earnings. She should get a P46 from her employer and complete it. She will then get a tax code which includes her personal allowance and means she can earn around £144 per week without paying tax.

I was assuming the paperwork was in order, but yes prh is right, it could be a lack of p46 that is the issue, her employer should have provided her with one to complete.

Yes. She fills out section 1 and her employer fills out section 2. She will need her NI Number. As she is under 16 she may not have been sent one yet. If that is the case she needs to ring Jobcentre Plus on 0845 6000643 to get one.
