I currently work three short days a week (school hours) and my company want to increase this to 9-5 but this will mean I am hardly better off due to the cost of after school care. Can I refuse?

Don't think they can force you but they may be able to make a case for redundancy if the post requires more hours. Will watch with interest as suspect I may be faced with similar when I return next week.

Yes they can only change your contract by agreement.

They could argue that they need cover 9-5 and make your post redundant with a new post covering what you did with more hours but that is a lot of hassle for them to go through for the sake of an extra few hours.
