Term Time Working Salary calculations and Local Government Service

I have worked within Local Government for 8.5 years and have resigned from post to take up another post within a neighbouring authority on a term time contract.

I have received a copy of my new contract today stating my starting salary but I can't work out how they've arrived at the quoted amount. My understanding is that as I have over 5 years of Local Government Service then I am entitled to 91.93% of the full time salary, and for purposes of sick pay, maternity pay and redundancy pay, my service will transfer with me. Is this correct?

Surely what percentage of the full time equivalent salary you get is entirely dependent on what hours you do? If you work, say, 75% of the hours a full time person would do, surely you'd get 75% of the pay as well. I'm the first to celebrate admit I have no LA specific knowledge, so I'm prepared to be enlightened if pay for part timers is dependent on length of service rather than pro rata.

In terms of continuous service I don't know whether transferring to a new Local Authority counts as continuous service, but presumably your HR department will be able to advise you. Does your contract not indicate continuous service then?

I really would have thought your own HR department who presumably drafted your contract would be best-placed to explain it to you.

moving from authority to authority counts as continuous service so extra holiday, sick pay etc should transfer. If your HR and payroll teams are anything like mine though they will manage to bugger it all up numerous times.

Thanks Choufleur - I thought I was right in thinking my service counts towards annual leave and therefore my pay for the term time calculation and I think the new LA have not taken into consideration so have incorrectly calculated my salary.

Flowery - as its a term time only contract I'm moving to, an element of holiday/bank holiday pay is added so although I'll be working 41 weeks, I get paid a few extra to cover statutory leave entitlement.

That sounds about right if you're working 41 weeks and have 5 extra days leave for long service. I work 39 weeks at a junior school, plus I have the extra days, so my percentage is a bit less (my docs are all at school, so I can't check the exact figures but iirc it's about 88%)

Are the hours you will be working the number that the LA regards as 'full-time' (in my case that's 37 hpw) If not, that would presumably reduce the percentage.

Thanks for the reassurance, it's a drop in salary for me and I thought I'd worked out it was affordable but the figure on the contract is far too low - I'm just panicking!

I bet what's happened is hr have just processed the form and the head got the amount wrong and hr didn't check .... Hope so anyway
