Just quit my job, what do I do if they won't give me my final wages?

I've been working part time at a local pub. Last night the manager shouted at me in front of the customers over something that was essentially her fault. don't need this job enough to put up with that, so after mulling it over, I went home after my shift, wrote a letter of resignation, and went back and dropped it off.

I normally get paid every Saturday for the week prior's work. So last week should be paid this Saturday, and the shift I worked last night should be paid on the 28th. I get paid in cash (but legally, payslips and all).

All of a sudden I'm worried they're going to not give me my wages. If they refused to give them to me, what would I do? I want to be prepared to threaten something if they give me any trouble. I didn't have any type of contract so there was no notice period as such. My next shift should have been tomorrow night.

Anyone know? Would I file a small claims case or something?

Just because there's no written contract doesn't mean there's no notice period. Once you've been working for the same employer for a month you are required by law to give a week's notice, so unless you've been there less than that time, you need to show up for work tomorrow night and for the rest of the week.

In terms of wages, if they don't pay you for time already worked you can bring a claim of non-payment of wages in a tribunal, so can threaten them with that, and also with a breach of contract claim.

Thanks Flowery. I didn't see this till today, but there is no way I'm going back in that place to be shouted at, and they are not the sort of people to know/care anything about employment law. I'd been there about 3.5 months.

Is there no provision for quitting with immediate effect if it is a hostile work environment? I've got plenty of witnesses for that!

Thanks for the information on wages. I am thinking they'll just want to pay me and get me out of there because it's already made the regular customers and staff upset that I've been forced out like this. If I were to come in and make a scene about not being paid for work done, it would be even more detrimental to their business.

Just to add you Might be able to use money claims online to recover your unpaid wages which is q easy to issue.

Well, no worries on the wages front, she gave me everything I was owed.

And would you believe, told me I was barred from the pub for six months! I laughed in her face and said 'as if I would give you my business anyway!' She is properly nuts.

I was also threatened with solicitors if I didn't take down a facebook comment where someone asked me why I'd left the job and I replied that I wouldn't tolerate an unprofessional cow shouting at me in front of customers. I've had a look, and I don't believe she can make a legal case out of it (my updates aren't public, I don't name her directly). Besides, it isn't libel when it's true
