Temporary contract - do I have to resign?

I think this is a stupid question but humour me!
I'm on a temporary contract due to come to an end at the end of November. Assuming I want to leave then, do I actually have to give a months notice, as in my contract, or not?
Thing is I think they wll keep extending it month by month at very short notice, and so that will be the default for them.

Well you don't have to resign, you could just not agree any proposed extensions. But if you think they will want to extend it and you know your intentions are not to accept an extension, it would be courteous to just discuss it with your boss either now or at a point where you are absolutely sure, rather than wait until they try to extend it and say no then.

you don't have to make a big issue. If you actually have a competent manager, you could (as you approach a month before end of contract) start saying "I may need to take some time off for interviews for my next job, I'll let you know when"

They would be foolish not to firm up your renewal/non renewal a month before expiry. Equally you need to be studying the job market in preparation.

A company I previously worked for, on contract, used to "assume" that you would be staying on, and send a renewal out either shortly before, or shortly after, expiry, expecting that you would just turn up. On one occasion, they did this with someone they didn't like, so he wouldn't get the hump, and then just told him not to come back on Monday. Obviously this was very inconvenient for him as he had not arranged a new job to go to.

Desperately job hunting...I want another job lined up

Sorry hijacking thread but it's the sane topic so pointless starting a new?!

My current contract ends at the end of this month as I was covering maternity leave. However, someone has left and my manager has had a chat and would like me to extend my contract instread of me leaving and them finding and training someone else. However I have 8 shifts left and still no mention of a new contract!
I have actually been offered a new job doing something more 'me'.
Do I need to give notice or justleave when my contract expires?

Other colleagues are assuming I'll be staying as there's loads of holidays booked over the next few months but I don't have a new contract anyway!

No problem for hijacking, hope you get an answer.
The mature thing would be to give them some notice. The child in me would act innocent and say "but you knew I was leaving when my contract ended,surely".

How long is 8 shifts in real time?

I've got 3 weeks left plus I'm on holiday for a week.
Ooh just thought. I've actually accrued 3 weeks holiday but only used one. Will I lose it if I leave :(

you shouldn't loose your holiday I think -I think they have to pay you - if you have another job which is confirmed tell them you are leaving -

Thanks movingandscared. You are correct about the holiday. It does state that in my contract so hopefully they'll pay me the holiday in my final pay :)

Feel bad leaving but this new job is better for me and the family (plus pay is more so that helps ;) )

Dilly when your manager asked you to stay on did you agree or not? If you agreed then as far as everyone is concerned, you are staying on - the fact that a new contract hasn't yet materialised doesn't change that.

Either way, yes I agree with SPB the mature, helpful and usual thing to do would be to let them know you won't be accepting the extension as you have found another job to go do.

Flowery back in April my manager said she'd see if there was enough in the budget as she'd like to keep me on. She has however, just been the referee for my new job!
It's mainly my colleagues who are merrily booking holiday saying that's ok you can cover that day etc etc...
