Would it be odd to ask to see references?

If you've been for a job interview, can you ask to see what people have said about you? It's just pure nosiness really, I know it will be good references. But any HR people around can tell me what the etiquette is?

It is confidential between company and person who supplied the reference, so they won't allow you to see it. If you get the job and start work there then you might be allowed to see it. It's not quite the done thing to ask, but HR won't mind you asking - once you're employed, that is.. If it is a very large organisation then don't bother asking though, because they will always refuse.
