Applying for a new job whilst on Mat leave - Paying Back monies?

If I were to get this job it would mean that I would only return to my current role for a month before leaving. I currently work in the NHS and would be going into private sector -

  1. What would i have to pay back and would they want a lump sum?
  2. How long would I have to go back for to avoid paying back any monies?

Any advice welcome, thanks!

You need to check your maternity policy for the answers to all those questions. I imagine it will probably say you have to pay back anything over and above statutory maternity pay and it should certainly state how long you need to return to avoid paying it back - 3 months is common but it varies. It may not state whether payment is expected in one lump sum, but I imagine the default position is payment in one lump sum (deducted as far as possible from holiday pay/other payments owing at termination), but payment arrangements are probably sometimes agreed.
