You're not giving an awful lot of information.

Is your original role redundant? You mention you are at risk of redundancy, which isn't necessarily the same thing.

Do you feel this alternative job was suitable for you? Same or similar terms and conditions, good match for your skills and experience, same salary level?
If your role is made redundant on maternity leave and there is a suitable alternative vacancy you have the right to be offered it without competition from others. If you felt this role was suitable and have not been offered it your first step should be to point out to them (in writing/email) that you believe the role was a suitable alternative and ask them to confirm reasons you didn't get this role and what alternative role they intend to place you in.

I know this thread was from a little while back, but i could be in the same situation (at risk of redundancy and about to start maternity leave) and can't get clarification from HR about what would happen if i was offered an alternative role but was just about to start my mat leave. would i either have to accept the role, and forfeit my maternity leave. or have to refuse the alternative role on the basis that i am due to be on mat leave for 12 months, and therefore have to accept redundancy pay rather than my smp and paid maternity leave (i work for the NHS).

sorry if this is a bit boring and complicated! it's playing on my mind and i can't find any answers on the direct gov website either.

You can accept the new role and take your maternity leave. Your entitlement to maternity leave would not be affected by the change of role.

mrsduff your HR dept are shockingly incompetent if they can't manage to answer that question for you tbh. Accept the new role, the only thing that will change is that you will be mat leave from that role instead of your old one.

thanks - yes they are incompetent, and gave me the link to the direct gov website by way of answering it.. doesn't inspire much confidence does it?!
