Want to convert garage into business premesis

I want to start a medical beauty business with a colleage. We have come up with the idea of converting my new garage into a small clinic environment. Has any body any experience of this?
My husband will be able to do all the building work for us so that is not an issue.
We would alter the front of the building to a front door and may also put a window in. Would I need plannng permission for this. Also what other changes would happen with regards to council tax/business rates etc.
Would I need to change any existing insurances?
Any ideas and advice would be welcome

You would need to approach the Council for planning permission for the alterations and also for change of use from residential to commercial use. Your Council's website might also have details of what taxes/rates are applicable for small businesses. You would need to get different insurance - professional insurance to cover the treatments you would be doing.

One other thing to check is the deeds of your house to ensure that there are no covenants preventing you from running a business out of your home.

Good luck! :)
