Housing Benefit instead of Tax Credits in final 3 months of maternity leave

Hi there - I'm now in my last 3 months of unpaid additional maternity leave & I have found myself caught short a little bit as I thought I would continue receiving Tax Credits in the final 3 months but have only just found out this stops when SMP stops.. So in the meantime could I claim Housing Benefit until I go back to work and start earning again in 2.5 months?
In a couple, 1 child 9 months old, privately renting but on a relatively low wage (less than 20k combined for last year)
Thanks!
(Any answers welcome as can find NO info on this anywhere - thanks!! :) x

it will be a joint claim....so your partners income will be taken into account too

also, takes a while to come through so why not just apply and see?
